Over the last few years, the consumer 3D printing market has become nearly unrecognizable due to cheaper options hitting the shelves. It wasn’t too long ago when we thought a $1,000 3D printer was pretty cheap, but now the price for assembled desktop machines has dipped even below the $200 mark.
This market shift has been spearheaded by an array of Chinese 3D printer manufacturers, one of the most recognizable being Wanhao. The company has spread its reach beyond FDM 3D printing and into desktop SLA/DLP technology.
However, the Duplicator i3 range still remains the flagship line for Wanhao. Both the Wanhao Duplicator i3 and Wanhao Duplicator i3 Plus are based on the RepRap Prusa i3 frame. But the latest addition to the family, dubbed as the Wanhao Duplicator i3 Mini, takes on a more stout appearance, a small 3D printer design which brings a hint of the Monoprice Mini Select to mind.
At $199, the new Wanhao Duplicator i3 Mini is situating itself within the growing market sector for desktop 3D printer’s that cost under $200, yet still, maintain decent print quality and reliability. The Creality Ender 3 is another example to enter this thriving field, indicating some type of universal stride that Chinese manufacturers are taking towards even greater affordability.
Unsurprisingly, compared to the rest of the Wanhao i3 family, the Wanhao Duplicator i3 Mini is more compact and smaller in size. The new printer’s predecessors–the Wanhao Duplicator i3 and Wanhao Duplicator Plus Mark II–both draw influence from the renowned Reprap Prusa i3 frame design. However, with the Wanhao Duplicator i3 Mini 3D printer, the Chinese manufacturer has nearly cut the overall footprint (and price) in half.
The Wanhao Duplicator i3 Mini comes fully assembled, making it a plug-and-play 3D printer. The compact build volume of 120 x 135 x 100 mm allows users to setup shop in even the most cramped and cluttered of work areas. Compared to the Wanhao Duplicator i3, which has a 200 x 200 x 400mm build volume, the print area reduction is certainly a noticeable downgrade.
This petite addition to the Wanhao i3 product range is capable of printing at a 100 micron resolution, which is about equal to that of its more costly counterparts. For long-term prints, the Wanhao Duplicator i3 Mini can reach an extruder temperature of 240°C, while short-term prints can supposedly be set at up to 260°C.
In their product listing on AliExpress, Wanhao shares some additional details on the new Wanhao Duplicator i3 Mini. For starters, the components for this 3D printer are all produced in-house with CNC machining. The manufacturer also claims to have reduced the potential for print failure by designing a stronger Z-axis, providing stable printing and enhanced precision.
The MK10 extruder on the Wanhao Duplicator i3 Mini has a maximum printing speed of 70mm/s, which is a bit underwhelming compared to other options in the $200 price range. It also has a display panel mounted on the base of the printer, which adds to the compact design of the 3D printer.
