Brooklyn 3D printing manufacturing company Voodoo Manufacturing just raised $1.4 million in funding from KPCB Edge. They will expand their team and add 50 3D printers to their printer cluster.

At the moment, 3D printing has not found its place in the world of mass production. But when it comes to small-batch manufacturing, this emerging technology has become an indispensable disruptive tool. The 3D printing service bureau Voodoo Manufacturing has conquered this expansive market with their automated 3D printer factory.

The Brooklyn startup recently completed a seed round of funding, raising $1.4 million from the collective investment firm KPCB Edge. Voodoo Manufacturing will aim to expand their automated factory to meet the growing demand of their customer base. Angel investors involved with the joint financial backing includes David Karp, the founder and CEO of Tumblr.

Expanding the Farm

Voodoo has also announced that they’ve expanded their team to 18 employees and added 50 new printers to their 2,000-square-feet factory.

The addition has brought their total number of 3D printers to 160, a majority of which are MakerBot Replicator 2. The startup has integrated automation software to consolidate their 3D printer farm, enabling the production of 1 to 10,000 unit runs at injection molding costs.

Max Friefeld, co-founder and CEO of Voodoo Manufacturing, said:

“We’ve had to scale quickly to meet customer demand, which was possible thanks to the software and automation tools we put in place early on. We are on a mission to make manufacturing scale more like software, and we are excited to have support from a world-class group of investors to build that future.”

Small-Batch Manufacturing, Big Time Reputation

Co-founded by ex-MakerBot engineers Max Friefeld, Jonathan Schwartz, Oliver Ortlieb, Voodoo Manufacturing started to fill the void around small-batch manufacturing. The startup recently joined the Y Combinator’s Winter 2017 batch. This accelerator has helped over 1,000 startups gain funding, including Reddit, Airbnb, Dropbox, and more.

The $1.4 million funding round and expansion comes after an exceptional year for Voodoo Manufacturing. The startup has worked on over 500 projects for companies like VH1, Microsoft, Lowe’s, NBC Universal, and much more. Their services have been widely used to create inventive branded marketing, promotional items, and various hardware components.

Having visited the manufacturing facility in the past, I can personally attest to the efficiency that Voodoo Manufacturing operates at. With their latest increase in printers, employees, and funding, the expanding startup will continue to pioneer the small-batch manufacturing market.
