Threeding and Artec 3D teaming up to digitize one of the biggest paleontology collections in Europe with 3D scanning and printing.

Ever wanted to own more 3D prints of dinosaur fossils? Then 3D printing marketplace Threeding and 3D hardware manufacturer Artec 3D can help.

Threeding and Artec 3D have announced a new collaborative project in the field of paleontology. Together, they are digitally capturing a huge paleontology collection owned by one of the largest private collectors in Central and Eastern Europe, Radoslav Trayanov.

The pieces date back primarily to the Pliocene, Miocene and Paleocene epochs. Trayanov has collected animal remnants, impressions and traces predominantly from Europe, while some of his models originated in North America.

But now everyone has the chance to enjoy, purchase and print 3D versions of these models by downloading them from Threeding.

Stan Partalev, co-founder of Threeding, said:

“We are very happy with the launch of this new collection. Working with Mr. Trayanov and the team from Artec 3D was very exciting and allowed us to bring our expertise to the unique field of paleontology. This project is another step towards our goal to turn Threeding.com into the ultimate digital library of high-end science and education 3D printing models.”

Capturing Paleontology Models with 3D Scanning

Artec 3D used their professional, high-resolution 3D scanning technology to capture the shape and texture of each fossil. For 3D modeling and post-processing, the team used Artec Studio 11.

Artyom Yukhin, president and CEO of Artec 3D, said:

“With 3D scanning technology, the spread of scientific information has become easier than ever. Mr. Trayanov’s private collection is the perfect example, as people from around the world now have access to the rare fossils he has painstakingly compiled. Due to the incredible detail in which our 3D scanners can capture objects, Threeding.com’s virtual and 3D-printed replicas will allow people to discover the intricate details of these fossils.”

This is the first commercial project combining 3D printing and paleontology. Threeding has added the fossils to their library of over 1,000 historical and scientific models.

You can already find the first 50 models on Threeding’s platform. A few of the pilot models include; Hypsopatagus meneghini, Belemnitella, Plate with Callovian ammonites, Lampadaster sp. Cotteau, and Hemipneustes Striatoradiatus Fossil.

All models can be 3D printed in color and are textured for full effect. The prices range between $10 and $20. You can also buy a physical 3D print but the prices will vary.

But this isn’t the end of the collaboration — both parties promise there is more to come. Artec and Threeding tease that they are already working on another project which will be announced soon. Watch this space.
