Designer creates a collection of beautiful silver jewelry using a ZMorph 2.0 SX Multitool 3D Printer and 3D printed molds.

Paula Szarejko is a designer who fabricates her own jewelry. Using her 3D printer and the technique of lost wax casting, she created molds for a fantastic collection of unique silver ornaments.

Her chosen 3D printer was the desktop ZMorph 2.0 SX, and the processes she used can also be applied to cast various different types of metal objects.

Needless to say, Szarejko was able to create the pieces much quicker and for less cost than regular manufacturing processes allow.

Making Silver Jewelry with Lost Wax Casting

Instead of using an industrial 3D printer or outsourcing services, Szarejko combined traditional jewelry making with her desktop 3D printer to realise her vision.

The first step was to 3D model the designs, and then 3D print the forms in ABS filament in sizes of about 5 x 5 x 4 cm each. From here, she created her molds by immersed her prototypes in cases with a two-component rubber.

After the rubber had set in about 20 hours, she opened the forms, cut the rubber molds in two, and extracted the prototypes. Thereafter she took the molds to a professional jeweler who injected them with wax.

The wax models were then dipped in liquid plaster, and the jeweler poured 45 g of silver into the mold to create the raw objects.

In order to create a flawless finish on these pieces, Szarejko used files and sandpaper to grind out any bubbles and clean the jewelry up.

Once the finishing touches were complete, she packaged each piece in her own 3D printed boxes, and the results are rather breathtaking.

The result is a beautiful collection which includes two pairs of earrings, three rings, and a low poly wolf head pendant.

As well as jewelry, this process is one which could be used to manufacture various other objects from a variety of materials. Designers are empowered by the possibilities afforded by 3D printing technology, and save time and money in the process.
