Gwendoline Christie, actress in Game of Thrones and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, had a dress 3D printed onto her body at Paris Fashion Week.

It could have been a scene from Game of Thrones. Brienne of Tarth laid motionless on a plinth, whilst the fabric of her clothing weaved around her body.

But no, it was actually a scene from Paris Fashion Week, where actress Gwendoline Christie participated in an exciting display of 3D printed dressmaking by designer Iris van Herpen.

Sculptures, which were “magnetically grown” by creative and technophile Jólan van der Wiel, wove the dress directly onto her body.

To do this they used several different techniques, including laser cutting, hand-weaving, and 3D printing.

The name of the new collection, Quaquaversal, means “going off in all directions,” and van Herpen told Vogue that backstage that’s how she approaches her work, collaborating with scientists, artists, biologists, and now actresses.

Gwendoline Christie has a “multidimensional experience”

Though admittedly it’s a very small field, it’s arguable that the Dutch couturier is currently the biggest name in 3D printed fashion.

With her innovative use of 3D printing materials, van Herpen is able to create shapes and silhouettes that wouldn’t be impossible with traditional manufacturing techniques.

And so her futuristic style often leaves the runway appearing more like a contemporary art installation than a fashion show.

“(Van Herpen’s) work reveals the secret structures of our existence giving us a multidimensional experience of what it is to be alive,” Christie told Dazed magazine, “It is an investigation into the past, present and future in all its primal and mythological forms.”

As Paris Fashion Week sets the trends of the coming seasons, it is likely we will be seeing a lot more technology and 3D printed based fashion. Indeed, Karl Lagerfeld has also embraced the technology with gusto.

This dress also appears to be the perfect fit for Christie, who can soon be seen outside of Game of Throne in two major science fiction franchises, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Pt 2

How do you feel about this use of 3D printing? Would you like to have your clothes 3D printed onto you every morning?
