Ever wanted to build your own engine? Pro-Maker Eric Harrell has proven that it can be done with just a 3D printer and some fasteners.

Eric Harrell is a mechanical engineer that goes by the name of ERICTHEPOOLBOY on Thingiverse. His interest is automotive 3D printing projects. You might remember his impressive replica of a Toyota 4 Cylinder Engine 22RE.

His latest replica is a Chevy Camaro LS3 V8 Engine. The engine is just as impressive: it is not just 3D printable but, as with all of Harrell’s projects, also fully functional.

Harrell used his Rep Rap printer for the engine, meaning you can easily print the model on any regular FDM 3D printer.

Check out the video below to watch Harrell assembling the engine and letting it run on an engine stand. You’ll also notice that other than the bearings and fasteners, all parts are 3D printed.

Tempted to Build Your Own Chevrolet Camaro Engine?

As with all of Harrell’s previous projects, the build was very labor-intensive. To create this full working model took over 200 hours of 3D printing and 2kg of filament.

Amazingly, it works together just like the real thing. Harrell modeled the parts from CAD files found on the internet, as well as diagrams and pictures from repair manuals.

He printed all of the parts in PLA plastic using his homemade RepRap Prusa i3s.The final assembly works together just like the real thing.

Interested in having a Chevrolet Camaro engine at home? You can download the parts and print your own. Harrel has included all files, parts lists, and instructions on his Thingiverse page. However, if you don’t feel confident enough to print and build your own, Harrell promises Hardware Kits will soon be available. The kits will not only help you build your own engine, but will also include the engine stand which fits Harrell’s other engine models. Keep an eye out for these on his Thingiverse page.

If you’d rather not do any work yourself, you can buy a full printed engine instead – just message Harrell. He adds: “I’m still working on setting up a website to sell them but you can PayPal me at ericthepoolboy@gmail.com if you want one.”
