Now We Know
by Carolyn Schwaar Aug 2, 2025
Scientists can now tell your 3D printed parts exactly how much they can lift,

ending the awkwardness when they're spotted at the gym. The gyroid — my favorite triply periodic minimal surface structure — is far more than a cool-looking infill option. Thanks to new research from the Univ. of Maine, the strength of gyroid infills can now be accurately calculated with a reliable mathematical formula. Engineers now have a predictive tool, rather than relying on extensive physical prototyping.
