Waste not, print more!

3D printing from in-house recycling brings BMW closer to plastic use circularity.

BMW Group's plastic waste generated from 3D printing hundreds of thousands of parts each year, which had been disposed of, along with shredded used parts, is now processed into new filament and distributed across BMW's global production network. About 12 tonnes of recyclable material can be made into filament annually. "The use of waste powder and discarded 3D printing components is a key element of a functional and efficient circular economy,” says Paul Victor Osswald, BMW project manager, who has worked on this initiative since 2018.
