Prusa Research has announced that the Original Prusa XL 3D printer will now come with a 0.4 mm nozzle. Until now, all of the 360 x 360 x 360 mm build volume printers shipped with 0.6 mm nozzles.

The announcement comes via X, where Prusa writes that the change is “directly connected” to input shaping, which was released for the Prusa XL and Mini last month in firmware V5.1.0. The feature results in “comparable” print times between the two nozzles, with the 0.4 mm version capable of achieving finer levels of detail with “no downsides”, the company says.

Given the change, all new XL owners will receive a 30% discount on brass and ObXidian nozzles, which will become available while finalizing their orders. Current XL owners can also make use of the discount when placing an order for new nozzles.

Online reaction seems positive so far, with many users on X and Reddit agreeing that the move is a reasonable one – especially given print quality will presumably improve. While a smaller nozzle may slightly decrease speeds overall, many users attest that they are not using the XL for large-scale prints, for which a larger nozzle may prove more beneficial.

We’ll see the real results of the switch in the coming months. Although – as Prusa states in its announcement – users can always switch back to a 0.6 mm nozzle should they wish to do so. For Prusa’s full statement, check out the X post.
