Luxexcel, a Netherlands-based company which describes itself as a pioneer in 3D printed ophthalmic lenses, has announced that its VisionPlatforms have now moved from the pilot phase to printing commercial lenses.
The company developed its 3D printing technology for fabricating functional lenses in 2009. In the last year, 5,000 lenses have been printed on VisionPlatforms installed in the US and Europe. As a result, Luxexcel lenses are being shipped to customers every day.

The benefit of VisionPlatforms is the huge reduction in waste. When making lenses in the traditional way, not only is the process labor intensive but around 80% of material is wasted.

To enable the creation of 3D printed ophthalmic quality lenses, the Luxexcel VisionPlatform is made up of lens-design software, workflow integration tools and industrial grade 3D printers.
The company assure that the resulting lenses meet industry requirements including all ANSI, ISO & FDA requirements.
