PLA is hard to beat for ease and aesthetic. Protopasta HTPLA takes PLA to new heights with higher temperature performance, exceptional quality, and exclusive aesthetics available nowhere else. Custom formulated and made from scratch. Make something special with Protopasta.

Dedicated. Capable. Diverse.

Since 2013, Protoplant has made Protopasta Filaments from scratch in the USA, prioritizing quality and creativity. Co-founded by three engineers, we’re in the details, experimenting and perfecting materials and processes for exceptional, industry-leading results.

A foot in two worlds, we explore both aesthetic and performance. We’ve created an extensive range of HT-PLA with sparkly and solid finishes which can be heat treated for higher temperature resistance than PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, etc. You might be shocked to learn that HTPLA heat treated for 10+ min in an oven preheated to 225 °F (107 °C) has heat resistance up to 300 °F (150 °C). Heat treating also improves impact resistance to levels rivalling other rigid materials.

It’s difficult to outperform HTPLA, but everything is a trade-off. HTPLA shrinks (1-2%) and can distort (geometry dependent) when heat treated. Still, NERF-modder Out of Darts chooses Protopasta HTPLA for reliable + easy printing, a variety of colors, and exceptional performance even without heat treating. When heat treating to maximize thermal performance, fiber-filled HTPLAs reduce shrink and distortion while increasing stiffness at elevated temperatures.

Relentless Innovation, Monthly

Did you know we add three new PLA colors every two months with Endless PLA? Subscribers get new filaments first and at a discount. In complement to our Endless PLA filament color subscription, we explore new ingredients, processes, and properties every two months through our Endless Exploration filament subscription. Learn about our past PLA and Exploration filaments in our Endless Stories blog or shop for our newest releases.

Many filaments are born from community collaboration. Do you have a unique need for 10s-1,000s of kg to support your unique project or business? We appreciate the opportunity to support other businesses with custom and stock filaments. Browse all our in-stock filaments (and sign up for out-of-stock notifications). Enjoy bulk discounts. Don’t see what you need? Contact us to discuss your custom needs.

We ship internationally with FedEx and DHL. Connect Plus service is a great value, but we can get custom last minute quotes for large orders. This is especially relevant for our international resellers. Operate a 3D printing store? You too can resell Protopasta. By the way, did you know Protopasta is AMS compatible? Yes, our cardboard spools work as-is, but you can keep them looking nicer with a 3D printed edge guard.

In June 2026, we started producing all new filament on #5 recyclable plastic spool sides so compatibility is more obvious and without question.

Releasing new filaments every month for years builds a wealth of stock filaments including metal (steel, iron, brass, bronze, copper), conductive (ESD-safe), and fiber (glass, carbon, wood) composites. We choose base materials without noxious fumes so we refuse to process ABS, ASA, and HIPS. While that somewhat limits our material selection, PLA, HTPLA, PETG, HTPETG, PCTG, PC, PBT, TPU, TPE, and PA (nylon) are some of our many remaining options.

Seeking outdoor performance? Consider a UV inhibitive surface coating or choose from black and white colors. Black reduces polymer degradation by absorbing UV, but the increase in part temperature may be undesirable. White reflects UV to reduce degradation while also reducing part temperature in sunlight and thus more comprehensively improving outdoor performance.

We’ve seen folks use heat treated Protopasta HTPLA in car engine bays. The creativity of our customers and performance of our materials never ceases to amaze! While it’s fun to consider high performance materials and applications, so much of what we print never leaves our home or office. In that case, enjoy the many HTPLA colors without heat treating. Prints like PLA. No heat treating required. For something extra special, choose real metal composites and add a unique human touch with oxidizing or polishing. Multicolor filaments like Nebula are another way to make each print unique.

Work or home. Serious performance or playful aesthetic. We’re here for you!
