Earlier this year, All3DP spoke to Sterling Backus, a gear head and laser physicist, about his 3D printed car project. Backus was inspired to build a Lamborghini Aventador using a 3D printer by his son Xander’s video game.

After almost two years of extremely hard work, the two have now taken their new car for a spin.

“The first drive was nerve-racking since we designed and built the frame and suspension. Get these wrong, and even at slow speeds it can be disastrous… It actually drove quite well considering!”

Many of the parts for this car were 3D printed one-by-one using CR-10S, CR-105S, and QIDI Xpro printers. The resulting plastic parts were coated with carbon fiber for strength.

However, before the test drive, Backus chose to strip off the shell so that any issues could be quickly resolved. Check out the test run in this video:

“Fully Dressed” Test Ride Coming Soon

To build this impressive car, Backus created parts using affordable 3D printers and then attached them to a space frame made from steel-box tubing.

As well as a steel frame, the car sports a suspension and drive train. Backus bought a few used Lamborghini parts but chose to use a V8 engine from a 2003 Corvette.

The first test drive went well without the shell, but the two plan on testing the car when it’s “fully-dressed” later down the line.

Backus explains that the aim of this project was to inspire students to follow their dreams.

“If you have an idea or passion, keep with it!” he said. “Solve the problems one at a time, and success will eventually come.”
