Yesterday was Creality’s 10th anniversary, and the 3D printing behemoth had a lot of announcements to mark the occasion, including a new multi-material system, the Creality Filament System (or “CFS”), and updates to the manufacturer’s slicer, Creality Print, to go with it.

Bambu Lab has been dominating multi-material 3D printing since its breakaway success, so it’s no wonder upcoming units like the CFS (and Anycubic’s recently revealed Color Engine Pro) look very similar; or that slicers are taking ques, too, while being updated to support the popular hardware.

For its part, Creality Print is getting some useful features in the upcoming 5.0 update that mirror some present in Bambu Studio and its popular open-source fork, OrcaSlicer. Multi-color support will obviously be a big focus, with features that make use of the CFS’ RFID reader to identify filament, “custom color adjustment”, and compatibility with 3MF files. But Creality says it’s also adding project plate management in 5.0 – an extremely useful feature, currently available in Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer, that allows large projects requiring multiple prints to be organized into one project file.

Creality Print is a CuraEngine-based slicer, unlike the Slic3r-based Bambu Studio. The company released it as open source last year, and in that release, we can see that some functions from Slic3r-based software – like PrusaSlicer and OrcaSlicer – are already referenced. This kind of feature adoption and referencing is common in the software, but it’s nonetheless nice to see Creality quickly dip into open-source solutions that suit its new hardware to provide users with familiar workflows – and give back to the open-source community as it does.

Both Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer have proven very popular in recent years, so it will be interesting to see how Creality’s “revamped” slicer appeals once it’s released.
