Bambu Lab is hunting beta testers for its new Chroma Canvas filament painting software – should HueForge be worried?
HueForge has occupied pole position in filament painting software for a while. Things might be about to change though, because Bambu Lab is encroaching into its space and launching its own alternative – Chroma Canvas.
Currently Bambu Lab is recruiting beta testers for the software, although it does state limited slots are available over on Bambu’s registration form. So, for interested users, it’s likely to be a case of filling out the form, hitting send, and seeing if you get lucky.

Filament painting software is a kind of simulation software that predicts what a multi-color print could look like by calculating filament’s transmission distance (TD), which is a measure of how much light the filament lets through. Different filaments have different transmission distances, and by knowing each filament’s TD you can then simulate the color effect, and adjust as required.
It requires filament changing at indicated layer heights, at least when you have a single extruder. Bambu Lab has its AMS filament changer though, so we’re assuming Chroma Canvas will be able to integrate itself with Bambu Studio, allowing users to create nuanced multi-color prints without needing to get too hands-on.
While Chroma Canvas is in beta, we shouldn’t neglect to mention HueForge itself is a pre-v1 (currently v0.9.1.2) release, and, as such, is technically an early release product, too. HueForge states this itself on its “What is HueForge?” web page.

If you’ve done multi-color printing before, Bambu wants to know about it – as well as if you’ve used HueForge – giving a clear indication of where it wants its new product to be positioned.
Time will tell if Chroma Canvas pulls anyone away from HueForge, but early comments by beta testers suggest it is slightly easier to use. For now, there’s not a lot else to go on. So, if you’re currently testing it yourself, get in touch with us! Leave us a comment with your thoughts.
