New heatbeds for Bambu Lab’s recently recalled A1 Cartesian 3D printers are on their way to warehouses, the OEM announced via X yesterday, and will be sent to users soon.
The new units’ cables have been “beefed up” and are now reinforced with Kevlar, have thinner copper, thicker insulation, and a nylon sleeve. They have also been given a shortened wind “to achieve better bending performance”, and the original (problematic) heatbed strain relief has received a longer, flexible redesign.
Bambu Lab submitted its new heatbed cable design to “accelerated life testing,” in which machines test the cable’s full travel length repeatedly. The company says the new cables’ full-travel durability was successful after 12 million tests.
The first replacements are, presumably, on their way to customers who chose to replace the A1 heatbed themselves, having been offered increased compensation at the recall to do so. But, Bambu Lab says the A1 will be available for purchase again “around the first week of May” – about three months since the printer was recalled.
