The Cricut Maker is an innovative smart machine used for a variety of crafts. With over a dozen tools and more than 300 materials at your disposal, a wide range of projects can be cut, including those made of fabric, leather, and even wood. For example, the Cricut Maker can easily cut balsa wood, basswood, and wood veneers.

Although it can be fragile, balsa wood is perfect for decorative projects. Basswood, on the other hand, is denser than balsa wood and much sturdier, so it’s easy to paint and stain its surface. Finally, Cricut’s genuine wood veneers – available in Walnut, Maple, and Cherry – are extremely thin and can be used for many different projects. You can even opt for chipboard if you’re after a more environmentally-friendly project (although it should only be used with Cricut Maker and Cricut Knife Blade).

With the help of Cricut’s companion app, Cricut Design Space, you can create customized designs from scratch or use one of the many free project templates in the app itself.

Some templates are only accessible through Cricut Access, the subscription service in Cricut Design that gives access to more projects created by members of the Cricut community. Cricut Access is free for the first 30 days, after which it has a price tag of $10/month. The subscription service gives users access to additional fonts, images, designs, discounts on licensed images, and ready-to-make projects. The free access through Cricut Design allows many of the projects to be purchased à la carte.

In this article, we’ll take a look at some of the best wood projects to get you started on your Cricut wood-crafting adventure.

Door Hanger

Welcome home!
Welcome home! (Source: Craft-e-Corner)

These door hangers are a staple for Cricut makers who have started doing wood projects. They’re often seen at street fairs and farmers’ markets being sold! You can customize the wording to say anything you’d like, from “Welcome” to something catchier.

These signs are easy to cut, but the words will be the tricky part. It’s recommended to paint the words and sign in contrasting colors for the best visibility, although you can choose any contrasting colors that’ll work best with the environment you’re decorating. You’ll need wood glue or a strong craft glue to attach the words to the sign. Once you’ve assembled the sign, attach a decorative string for hanging.

Letters & Words

Cutting projects that feature letters and words are great for personalized signs, home decor, and more! You can create monograms using your initials or place words against a contrasting color backdrop to decorate walls and tables.

Cricut Design Space offers a wide variety of appealing fonts and styles, available either for free or with a fee. When cutting with wood, you should choose fonts without thin lines or weird cuts because they’re more likely to break. Once you’ve decided on the font and type of wood, tape the wood to the strong grip mat and begin cutting.

Adorning Christmas trees with ornaments is a time-honored tradition. Now with Cricut, you can make basswood ornaments to add to the charm of your Christmas tree. Holiday-themed designs such as mini Christmas trees and snowflakes are favorites among Cricut enthusiasts.

Load the design into your Cricut Maker and begin cutting the tree ornament. The design includes slits that allow the parts to be connected. Custom Wooden Photos

A unique keepsake for friends and family
A unique keepsake for friends and family (Source: Jennifer Maker)

With most wood projects, we expect to be cutting and shaping the wood into beautiful creations. However, that’s not always the case. This “wooden photo” is a great example of how creative you can get with your Cricut, no cutting required!

Make sure you flip the image on your computer before printing and transferring it to the wood. Also, double-check that your Mod Podge is dishwasher safe since the transfer process involves water.

If you’re an avid maker, little bits and pieces can easily lead to a messy workspace. It’s just part of the job! But hey, why not make something to help you out? These wall pockets do a great job of holding all the little things that need organizing in your workspace. And while we could’ve included this project in the next category, the wall pockets have a double function and they’re too cute not to include as decor pieces.

When cutting the chipboard, use the StrongGrip mat for the best results. It’s the right tool for the job! Also, if you don’t want to damage your walls during installation, sticky mounting tabs are a great alternative.

Stegosaurus

This project is a fun activity for the little ones to assemble, although given the width (2 mm), it’s best left as a decorative piece rather than as a toy. This is also why putting the parts together should be done with some care.

You can use basswood or balsa wood along with the Cricut Knife Blade, but be sure to secure the wood with masking tape to a strong grip mat, or your preferred wood adhesion method. If you opt for basswood, Cricut has some tips and tricks to guide you in the cutting. Once cut, you can use one of the included photos as a guide to complete the stegosaurus as you would any other similar puzzle.

People have different ways to keep track of the pages they’re on while reading a book. Some make dog ears. Others just use anything handy: scraps of paper, pens, clips, and other such things. With Cricut Maker, you can create funky and unique bookmarks – even some specially designed for your favorite books.

You can design your own bookmark with Cricut Design Space or use one of the designs provided by the project’s designer. If you choose to design your own, make sure the bookmark is a single solid piece with all the individual design elements connected. You’ll also want to use a strong grip mat and tape to hold down the wood. Once you’ve got everything ready, all you have to do is hit the Go button to get started.

This adorable elephant is a charming desk ornament with a practical purpose. It serves as both a phone holder and a pencil stand, helping your desk stay free of clutter.

For this project, upload the provided template file and let the Cricut Maker cut the pattern. It’s good practice to arrange the pieces to make the most out of the material, reducing waste. After cutting, make sure to clean the notches and edges. You can also sand the wood to give it a smoother finish. To make the project more lively, you can paint the parts.

After you’ve assembled the elephant, secure it from the inside with hot glue.

Wooden Desk Calendar

You’ve probably seen the desk calendar where you flip through the days or months. There are also the ones that let you see the entire year at a glance. This dodecahedron wooden desk setup combines these two calendars in a quirky, 3D way.

Wooden panels and a card template are the key components of this project. The wooden panels are glued on the card template, which provides the skeletal structure for the calendar. You’ll attach both the fine-point blade and the scoring wheel to your Cricut Maker. The blade will cut the dodecahedron card template, while the scoring wheel will make the necessary creases for the fold lines.

This project also requires the Cricut Knife Blade and a fine-tip pen. These will allow you to cut the balsa wood and write the months on the wood (you can opt for color pens for a more unique look). In the final step, the wooden faces are attached to the card template using double-sided tape, then the tabs of the card template are folded and taped together.

DIY Garden Signs

Give your garden some character with these cute signs (Source: Ursula Carmona)

These garden signs are a must-make for any gardener! The sky’s the limit with creating your own design, and they’ll add a personal feel to your outdoor green space. They’re also a useful way to organize your garden and different plants.

When designing your sign, you’re not too limited in terms of fonts. You’ll just want to be sure they’re easy enough to cut. After gluing the letters to the sign, the creator suggests clamping it to a flat piece of wood to prevent the basswood from curling. They also recommend using clear-drying Mod Podge to seal the insides of the letters to protect against the elements!

Jewelry can be really easy to lose, so why not keep it safe in a tray? This pretty personalized tray is a perfect way to keep your trinkets in one place. The design features a hexagonal border and an engraved initial in the center.

The creator found that a lighter wood veneer yields better results. After setting the border, lightly sand it to ensure a smooth and even surface.

Scrabble is a favorite board game for many, and with a Cricut Maker, it’s easy to relive the good times! These little Scrabble tiles are super easy to make, and you can customize them. You can either go for the official distribution or tweak it for a personalized version of the game. Of course, if you’re a true fan – or want to gift something to one – you can make a sign with a name spelled out with them.

The creator of this design says that using iron-on vinyl for the letters is key to getting good results. Plus, it’s much easier than dealing with transfer tape.

These personalized basswood coasters will help keep your table surfaces free of unwanted liquid stains. Along with providing a pop of pattern and color to your tabletop, they will undoubtedly wow your guests.

In this project, you’ll create a monogram or any pattern you wish to have on the coaster in Cricut Design Space. Once the monogram or pattern is cut into the wood, apply the adhesive paper. This will make the design stand out.

You can apply Mod Podge to the spaces within the letters or pattern to give it the appearance of resin and keep the adhesive paper from getting wet. After all this, a few coats of varnish will give the basswood a smooth look.

Earrings

These wood veneer earrings are slim with an incredibly smooth finish. Since actual wood is used to produce veneers, the grain pattern and color will vary, making each product unique. With Cricut’s Deep-Point Blade, you may create designs and patterns for wood veneer as complicated as you’d like.

Tape down your piece of veneer and cut one pair of earrings at a time. You may need to reinforce the earrings with cardstock, but the designer also found that gluing two veneer sheets together works for some designs. You can use a sealant like Mod Podge or acrylic spray to prevent wear and tear.

Bottle Serving Tray

Everyone knows wine goes with charcuterie
Everyone knows wine goes with charcuterie (Source: Jennifer Maker via YouTube)

Try out this creative new take on charcuterie boards with the wine bottle serving tray. Now you can include all of your pairings in one display, and keep the drinks, whichever they may be, within reach!

You can make these boards as large as your Cricut can handle, and you’ll need three bottles of similar height or shape. You can use basswood or balsa wood along with the knife blade, but be sure to secure the wood with masking tape to a strong grip mat. You can create reinforcements or extra layers and adhere them together with wood glue or another strong adhesive glue in case you want to add heavier snacks. This project includes a tutorial video as well.

Once you’ve completed your serving board, you’ll need to do a few extra steps to use it around food. First sand it with extra fine sandpaper to give the surface a smooth finish. If you want to change the look of your wood serving board you can apply wood stain, vinyl, or paint. The final essential step before interacting with food, the board should be sealed with polyurethane or a polycrylic sealant.

DIY Name Puzzle

This is an amazing gift for the toddler who is starting to learn their name! You can also change the words for other occasions, such as birthdays, or themed for the holidays. This is also a fun way to introduce children to colors, for example, you can cut out the letters “purple” and paint the letters as such.

The tutorial not only includes tips but also does a step-by-step part with images to help you get a very clear understanding of how you’ll get the best results. In any case, you’ll want to secure the wood pieces to a strong gripped mat and, depending on the intended use and how the different parts come out, you might want to sand them before adding some color.

Travel Chess Set

This on-the-go chess set is sure to attract some attention (Source: The Crafty Gentleman)

This is a chess set made to be played on the go. The minimal form of the pieces is inspired by Bauhaus design, and each piece’s specific movement is the basis for its design. The bishop, for example, has a cross design because it only moves diagonally.

In this project, you’ll start by creating the geometric shapes for your chess pieces in Cricut Design Space. Only three set pieces need special balsa wood decorations: the rook, the knight, and the bishop. The checkerboard grid is available in the Cricut Design Space. All you need is iron-on material, which will be cut and applied to a drawstring bag.

Pyrography

A tray for Santa so he can enjoy snacks in between delivering gifts
A tray for Santa so he can enjoy snacks in between delivering gifts (Source: Mr. Crafty Pants via YouTube)

This wooden board is a festive tray made for Santa’s snacks. The Christmas-themed tray is embellished with burn marks using pyrography, a technique in which a heated object is used to slightly burn the wood. However, this project uses ammonium chloride instead of a branding iron to achieve the burnt look.

For this design, you’ll need a wooden board that isn’t waxed, sealed, or painted. With the Cricut, you’ll cut a stencil of the design in vinyl, and using transfer tape, tape the vinyl onto the board.

Use a chemical solution made of ammonium chloride, a thickener, and warm water to create the burnt look. You’ll apply a thin layer of this solution to the negative spaces of the stencil, and when the chemical dries, remove the vinyl and apply heat with a heat gun. The heat burns the chemical from the wood, providing the design with a beautifully charred look.

  • Difficulty: Intermediate
  • Project page: Mr. Crafty Pants
  • Cost of design: Usually around $1-$3 per pattern, bundle is ∼$5
  • Recommended blade: Cricut Premium Fine-Point Blade
  • Key materials: Wooden tray, permanent vinyl, ammonium chloride, heat gun
