Technology in the palm of our hands has advanced enough to allow us to work on a 3D file on the go, just as efficiently as – if not sometimes better than – on desktop computers. These 3D files may contain anything, from basic 3D models to high-resolution video game elements.

Below, you’ll find a selection of the best 3D viewer apps that let you open a 3D file on your iOS or Android device. Some of these are cloud-based browser apps that support most CAD formats and can be used on almost every device with a supported browser and a decent internet connection. At the same time, other apps are dedicated to Android and iOS with additional features such as offline functionality, sharing tools, and other valuable features. At a minimum, all the apps support basic 3D model formats like STL and OBJ.

But before we head into the list, let’s look at our criteria for making our picks.

Considerations

There are numerous 3D viewer apps across the internet, so we’ve used a few key considerations to narrow down the options.

  • Multiple file formats: Most of these apps support multiple CAD file formats, from basic STL and OBJ files to other commonly used 3D file formats such as 3DS, STEP, GLB, and glTF.
  • Platform options: We’ve included apps catering to both iOS and Android users as well as some browser-based apps for if you don’t want to install the program and want to get started on the go.
  • Affordable: Preferably, opening files within a 3D viewer app should be free with premium tools available as app purchases. Most of our options are free, with a few paid options that offer a free trial.
  • Intuitive: The shortlisted apps are user-friendly and stack in basic features such as panning, orbiting, and zooming, along with other helpful features such as multiple file support, export options, and sharing tools, among others.

Although these apps work fine on a smartphone, using them on a device with a bigger screen, like a tablet, is recommended.

ViewSTL is a browser-based app that can open 3D files such as OBJ and STL without having you sign in or sign up for an account. It’s a reliable option for users looking to open 3D files without downloading and installing an app. Since it’s browser-based, an active internet connection is required.

Viewing any document is as simple as dragging and dropping a file. Alternatively, you can browse your device (denoted by a file logo), which directs you to the file directory of your device, and there’s also an option to open a file through a URL.

Once the file’s uploaded, you can use the top menu bar to toggle between multiple orientations, turn on the grid, take screenshots, export, or even change the background color. Using this program is as easy and intuitive as it gets.

A fairly straightforward app, Exocad has an intuitive user interface (UI) across all the different platforms, from the web app to the iOS, Android, and Windows versions, and can be a great pick for beginners. It can open popular 3D file formats such as PLY, STL, and OBJ. It’s completely free to use and doesn’t even require sign-in or registration.

Exocad also allows users to import 3D files via cloud services like iCloud and Google Drive. To open a 3D file, you need to install the app on your device or visit the web app. Then click on “Load file” or “Google Drive” and select the desired file from your device. If you wish to use iCloud Drive, choose the “iCloud Drive” location after clicking on “Load File”.

The app also prompts if you wish to import textures for the mesh; if you want to do this, go ahead and import the texture right away, as it’s not possible to add them later on. Once you’ve imported the 3D file, you can toggle the shading as well as change the field of view by up to 90°. Standard features such as zooming and panning work as usual; use your fingers, mouse, or trackpad to interact with the object.

This popular STL viewer app has high ratings and is free to download, with inexpensive in-app purchases available. Users are enthusiastic about its capabilities for seeing minute details and keeping STL files remotely organized when working away from their computers. Other well-liked features are the capabilities to examine meshes, delete parts of models, and edges detection.

It’s a very intuitive and easy-to-use app, and users praise its speed and simple interface, although a downside is that, as mentioned by a reviewer, you can’t share the files. The app creators are responsive to user queries and issues. Another nice aspect of this viewer is it appeals to users of all levels; it offers more advanced features while being straightforward enough for newbies to 3D printing.
