Why does nobody ever talk about how great some third albums are? Led Zeppelin III has the best Led Zeppelin song on it. First Impressions of Earth was the most coherent album by The Strokes, and Massive Attack’s Mezzanine is a trippy dark funk ferry ride – all underrated masterworks.

Sovol won’t care much for our musical taste, of course, but they will care about the new SV03. It’s the firm’s third printer, continuing with the world’s most boring naming strategy, yes, the Ying to Artillery’s Yang in that sense, but let’s give Sovol a pass on that for now and instead focus on what it’s bringing to the desktop.

Direct drive extrusion, a slightly above-average (for this CR-10-derived style of printer) build area of 350 x 350 x 400 mm, automatic bed leveling, dual Z-axis steppers, and respectful-to-the-chapel-quiet TMC2208’s. Sounds alright to us.

Read on as we play you the full track listing for SV03. All killer? Or lots of “infiller”?

Features

Big Space for Big Prints

At 350 x 350 x 400 mm, the Sovol SV03 has a printing area larger than most modern inner-city studio apartments. . Build areas of 300 x 300 mm are pretty commonplace, so a slight edge with 50 mm extra in each direction here is good – provided it has the hardware to heat it well enough.

The build plate is of the textured glass you find on more than a few printers nowadays. We’ve used plenty during time testing 3D printers here at All3DP and find them universally decent.

Heating to 100 degrees Celsius, the Sovol SV03’s bed should be suitable for your everyday filaments such as PLA, PETG, and flexibles.

Direct Drive

Direct drive extrusion brings a couple of claimed advantages to the Sovol SV03. Firstly, that it makes the printing of flexible filaments a bit easier – which we’d argue has as much to do with how tightly constrained the filament path is than the extruder’s location.

The other benefit to direct drive is that your printer can exercise a greater degree of control over the filament’s retraction. Depending on the rigidity of your printer’s build, this extra weight on the printhead could lead to some ripples in prints’ surfaces. It’s not a given but illustrates the challenges of the balancing act of a 3D printer.

Automatic Bed Leveling

Always a treat, the Sovol SV03 ships with a BLTouch already installed. That means it can register the height variance across a mesh of points on the bed, feeding this data to the printer so that it can make the necessary offsets as it prints. It is a nice little feature that saves you from getting out a piece of paper and twiddle with some knobs below the bed. We like.

X- and Y-axis Belt Tensioners

Always useful for keeping things nice and tight, the belt tensioners here should help you ensure that accuracy remains in your printer way down the road. Give them a tightening up occasionally, and the printhead should stay on track, reducing the chance of wobbly, messy messes of prints.

Dual Z-axis Steppers

Presumably, to keep things sturdy and well balanced, Sovol has opted to install dual z-axis stepper motors on the frame of the SV03. It’ll keep the weight evenly distributed and lower the center of gravity, which theoretically should stop any pesky vibrations causing wobble-based imperfections in your prints. It’s unclear if these are synchronized, so it may need a little attention from time to time to correct any drift between the two lead screws, leveling out the X-axis rail.

There are a few other noteworthy features:

  • TMC2208 equipped mainboard: Promises quieter and smoother stepper movement.
  • Filament sensor: Pauses the print when a loose end of filament passes through.
  • Touchscreen and Tungsten upgrade: Official upgrades from Sovol. Perhaps these would have been better just coming with the printer as standard.

Price

At the time of writing, there’s a bit of a Chinese New Year celebration going on, so you can get a small discount on the Sovol SV03’s normal price tag of $460. Going for the touchscreen and the tungsten nozzle upgrade will set you back an extra 50 bucks on top of this, but if you want the best kit for your new SV03, you’re probably going to be happy to pay that.

A bit of a whopper. (Source: Sovol)

There aren’t many reviews out there yet, so we can’t tell you if there’s some sort of great consensus on the Sovol SV03 yet. Going by previous Sovol machines we’ve seen, we expect it will largely live up to expectations. It seems to be a well-rounded machine, occupying some kind of middle ground between Creality’s main CR-10 series machines and Artillery’s Sidewinder X1. We haven’t tried it for ourselves, though, so take any hint of optimism here with a pinch of salt.

Creality Ender 5 Plus

The Creality Ender 5 Plus is a machine with almost the same specification as the new Sovol SV03. So, it can toe-to-toe with the Sovol for printing prints blessed with the power of big, but the placement of its BLTouch did leave us a little frustrated. If the Sovol can do it better, it could make Creality blush.

Creality CR-10 V3

Another Creality in our reality, the CR-10 V3 isn’t perfect, but it is effective. It prints good prints, but those good prints come at the cost of noise. It isn’t a particularly quiet machine, but using a genuine E3D Titan extruder does give it a little razzle-dazzle that these other machines lack.

Artillery Sidewinder X1

You won’t forget a name like that. The Sidewinder X1 is a solid mid-range 3D printer that is quick to heat up, very quiet when operating and not a bad price at all. However, its standard filament holder will make you want to cry and its wiring is a bit on the delicate side. That being said, we still enjoyed our time with it.
