Dremel 3D40 Flex: Review the Specs

Features

Image of Dremel 3D40 Flex: Review the Specs: Features

Let’s see what the Dremel 3D40 Flex brings to the table.

Flexible Build Plate

The most significant novelty – added to 3D40 Flex – and as the name already suggests; is the flexible build plate.

Not only does it allow for quick and easy removal of finished prints without the use of spatulas, but it should also help with keeping the print bed leveled and preserving the calibration; as you don’t have to rock the whole thing every time you try to get your print off.

Literally on top, the flexible bed has a replaceable layer that helps parts adhere better during printing and come off easily afterward. According to Dremel, these sheets typically last around 50+ prints, and even longer if they don’t get scraped or damaged in other ways. Additional replacement sheets are included.

High-Speed Mode

The 3D40 Flex features an additional print mode that is said to offer increased efficiency when focusing on continuous output, for example, in classrooms or rapid prototyping. Selecting the new “high-speed mode,” the machine prints up to 30% faster than its predecessor, therefore saving valuable time. This can also be helpful for makers, who want to create an object but see a draft of it first.

At the same time, the Dremel DigiLab 3D40 Flex strives to enable users to achieve maximum precision for more complicated projects that require a high level of accuracy; with their “ultra-high-resolution mode.”  This should allow for print results to be more precise and have a smoother surface — guaranteeing decent results for projects involving curves, diagonals, organic shapes, or intricate details.

Fully Enclosed Desktop Printer

As with its previous models, Dremel seeks to provide a comprehensive 3D printing ecosystem tailored for education. To make their printer suitable for K-12 education institutions, they set it up with several features.

For starters, it comes fully assembled, and the only steps to get going include loading the filament and leveling the bed. Furthermore, their 3D printer is UL-Saftey Certified. Another feature, which goes hand in hand with making this printer suitable for school environments – apart from its actual size – is the fully enclosed design. The enclosed build chamber of the printer protects the classroom from potentially harmful VOC. The build chamber of the DigiLab 3D40 Flex also acts as a safeguarded that keep out sources of contamination such as dust, as well as curious fingers, while printing is in progress. The transparent doors also offer a good view of the workpiece, as well as dampen the noise generated.

A Curriculum for Teachers

Not only does the Dremel DigiLab 3D40 Flex’s ease of setup and operation make it suitable for teaching 3D printing in school, but also beyond the machine itself, Dremel supplies the possibility of involving its 3D printers in the classroom with a modest collection of prepared lesson plans available through their website. Molded around the various stages of K-12 education, the classes promote research-based learning with quick and simple 3D prints.

Furthermore, Dremel also offers a course to become a Dremel-Certified Instructor with a 4-hour self-paced online class to learn how to implement 3D printing in the classroom. Besides becoming a Dremel Certified Instructor, the course instills the skills that allow for flexibility beyond the company’s lesson plans.

On top, Dremel offers EDU bundles for their 3D40 Flex printer, coming with extra filament spools, multiple build tapes and with 30 lesson plans.
