OpenSCAD is software for creating solid 3D CAD objects. It’s not an interactive modeler like other options on our top CAD software list — It’s more like a 3D compiler that reads a script file that describes the object and then renders the 3D model from this. This means designers have complete control over the modeling process and can change any step or make designs that are defined by configurable parameters. Rhino (also known as “Rhinoceros”, “Rhinoceros 3D” or “Rhino 3D”) is a parametric modeling program developed by Robert McNeel & Associates in Seattle, Washington, USA. Rhino is used in many fields, including professional architecture, engineering, and construction.
Rhino primarily works with non-uniform rational B-splines – or NURBS – to make 3D objects. What are NURBS? They are mathematical representations that can accurately describe any 2D line, circle, arc, or curve, to the most complex organic free-form surface or solid. NURBS are flexible and accurate ways of 3D modeling things and, as a result, can be used in any process — from illustration and animation all the way up through manufacturing.
