Woof Woof! Miracle the 3D Printing Dog (and His Human)

3D Printing Dog

On the internet, nobody knows you’re a 3D printing dog. Miracle and his human Dave Kim are printing technical sculptures with moving parts.

3d Printing dogDave Kim started his career as an architect but spent the past 20 years in finance. Today he’s a 3D printer based in Pennsylvania. Holding degrees from MIT Columbia Business School, he seems to be pretty experienced in his many fields.

In 2014 he founded a company, very aptly named 3D Printing Dog. They focus on designing beautiful objects based on scientific principles, with built-in moving elements. The tag line? No assembly required.

So where’s the dog?

Miracle was a stray dog on the streets on Philadelphia. After being struck with a vehicle and left for dead, he was picked up by animal control. He was in bad shape, and not expected to survive.

Of course, that’s why he would soon be named “Miracle.” The dog not only recovered, but he was taken to PAWS, the local no-kill shelter. He would soon find his forever home with Dave Kim.

With the support of Dave Kim and blogger Mike Vad, Miracle is the beating heart of 3D Printing Dog. He can be found on their website (where they keep an extensive blog) or Shapeways.

“When (Miracle’s) not out chasing squirrels, he enjoys 3D CAD modeling. His skills include the following software: Solidworks, Rhino & Blender.”

Miracle also doubles as a model, showcasing the company’s newest prints. Best of all, a portion of every sale is donated to PAWS.

So far, 3D Printing Dog has churned out 3D printed mini-escalators, mini-bicycle-wheels and even a deconstructed Archimedes screw. The pieces are intended to be little technical sculptures for the home or office — so, no, you can’t use the bicycle wheel at this time.

By printing pieces that require no assembly despite their moving parts, Kim and Miracle are showcasing the great potential of 3D printing. At the moment, we see only a dog and his human making table-top art, but they’re also part of a movement to bring this exciting technology to the next level.
