As 3D printers become a standard tool in dentists’ labs, architects’ offices, and jewelers’ studios, efficiency and ease of use are top attributes. These professionals are less interested in adjusting printer settings and more focused on receiving the part they expect consistently.
A compact, one-click operation wax model 3D printer designed specifically for jewelers is just what Solidscape says its customers want, so it developed its smallest and most affordable wax 3D printer yet, the Muse. Solidscape, a company by Prodways, the large French industrial 3D printer maker, already offers a line of precision wax printers aimed at commercial jewelers looking for large throughputs, starting above $20,000
Priced under $15,000, Muse is designed to bring wax model 3D printing to any size custom jewelry studio, according to Solidscape. It features material jetting technology similar to the larger Solidscape machines.
“Our partners and Jewelers were part of every step of the creation of the Muse, from research to development to testing. We incorporated their most important wants and developed the best machine for custom jewelers,” says Alban D’Halluin, Solidscape CEO. “The common theme in our feedback was accessibility, and that’s what we set out to do. To create the most accessible Solidscape 3D printer for custom jewelers.”
The Muse has an easy-to-follow graphical interface and cloud connectivity so jewelers can track their printing 24/7. The company says it’s easy to get you up to speed, and printing quickly with the Muse because its software, ModelWorks (Windows only), automatically formats CAD files for 3D printing and automatically generates support structures.
Another ease-of-use feature is the melt-away support structures that require no manual removal or sanding as you would have with SLS or other resin 3D printing technologies. Material jetting enables the Muse to print with multiple materials (wax and support material), placing the soluble supports and the model wax precisely down to a 25.4-micron layer thickness.
The Muse only makes wax models, so there’s only one model material, Solidscape’s proprietary Midas wax developed specifically for lost-wax casting, with accurate results in all precious metals, the company says. Eliminating the mess of liquid material, Midas comes in a solid pre-measured stick that’s inserted into the printer.
The build area is small at just 76.2 x 76.2 x 47.7 mm, which accommodates four models per day, Solidscape says. Compared to the company’s other wax 3D printers, the Muse is slower and smaller, but that’s the trade-off for the price.
