In a Reddit post this week, developer Vipul Rajan showcased a Blender plug-in that can emulate a 3D printing time-lapse using only G-code generated using PrusaSlicer. This makes it possible to create photorealistic renders of 3D printing without an actual 3D printer.

The Stitch3r G-code Renderer from Create Inc “takes into account various heights and widths of the G-code and delivers a very realistic-looking model,” reads the Blender Market webpage for the plug-in. There, a step-by-step guide takes users through the relatively simple process of creating a time-lapse of their own. The end result shows the material, print plate, lights, and set – and features one-click processing.

“I’m working hard on making things better and exploring options everywhere, from Unreal Engine 5 to OpenGL, and openly looking for people who’d like to contribute in any way – especially financial backing,” Rajan said when contacted for comment.

While the plug-in is still in the beta – and serves a very specific purpose – the results are nonetheless impressive, not to mention well-suited to sharing on social media. The plug-in is now on sale for $15, with a promise from Rajan to make it open source should it reach 3,000 likes on YouTube.
