Autodesk has introduced a free generative AI plug-in to its Fusion CAD software.

Project Salvador – a reference to the surrealist artist – is currently in beta and leverages APIs from popular AI models, including OpenAI GPT4 Turbo, DALL-E (also a Dali reference), Stable Diffusion, and Vectorizer AI to offer AI workflows within Fusion.

After downloading and installing the plug-in from the Autodesk App Store, users will be able to use four generative AI functionalities: text to image, image to image, image to Canvas, and text to Sketch.

Text to image is fairly self-explanatory – and will undoubtedly be familiar to anyone who has dabbled with generative AI technology. Users simply input a text prompt (or choose the GPT-created “enhanced” version of said prompt) and the plugin will generate a reference image based on it.

For image to image, users upload an image file or take a screenshot of a Fusion model, then have the plugin generate a variation of it. Meanwhile, the image to Canvas function allows users to import an AI-generated image as a Fusion Canvas. Here, Autodesk mentions tracing, logo creation, and “make-shift” backgrounds as potential use cases.

Text to Sketch is maybe the most practical Fusion-AI integration of the bunch. It takes user-input text, optimizes it for a Fusion Sketch, then generates an image based on that optimization that can be imported to the Canvas. From there, users can use the new “Generate Sketch” command to, you guessed it, generate a Sketch.

Overall, there’s a lot of potential for creativity with Project Salvador, which will seemingly only grow as the plugin (and generative AI technology) improves and evolves – although right now it seems to exist more in novelty territory than anywhere else. Still, that doesn’t mean it’s not worth tinkering with.

Project Salvador is now available. Before you get started, however, you may want to check out Autodesk’s blog post that introduces the tool. There, you’ll also find a short YouTube video that showcases the plugin’s various functions and sheds more light on exactly how you can put it to use.
