You can now 3D print unique vases in a variety of shapes without having to design them yourself thanks to one maker’s Sine Wave Generator which uses the concept of sine waves and four horizontal zones.

If you’re unfamiliar with OpenSCAD, creating a vase from scratch can be a daunting task. However, one YouMagine contributor has developed an open source system which enables anyone to generate interesting vase shapes.

Peetersm is the Michigan-based maker who produced the system. Although it’s not the simplest generator to use, if you have some experience or understanding of OpenSCAD and sine waves (the mathematical equation), you should be fine.

Once you’ve got that down, you can create a whole range of unusual vases using the system. Every time you need a new vase, simply use OpenSCAD to change the four horizontal zones controlled by periodic sine waves.

Interested in having a go yourself? You’ll need to closely follow a few instructions laid out by Peetersm in order to start creating your own vases.

New to OpenSCAD? Essentially, it works by using a series of commands organized in a similar way to a software program. This process can be very confusing unless you have software development skills.

However, with Peetersm’s system, you can simply tweak the generator and the outcome will be very different to what you started with. There’s also little need for a huge understanding of OpenSCAD once you have the generator set up and ready to go.

To do this, simply install OpenSCAD for free. Then, download Peetersm’s Sine Wave Generator. Peetersm includes detailed text instructions to follow once you’ve downloaded OpenSCAD.

Finally, once you’re all set up, you can work with five settings to change your design and come up with a beautiful vase 3D model. After creating the perfect design, export it and it’s ready to go to the printer.

However, if you’re uninterested in the labor and simply want the final product, you can visit Peetersm’s YouMagine page where he has a few Sine Wave models ready to be printed. Just remember to buy some flowers to fill all of your new vases.
