Proving that the internet really is a wonderful place, someone has created a how-to guide to make your own Cappy from Super Mario Odyssey.

Don’t Miss:

Super Mario Odyssey is a fine return to form for Mario Mario, with critics likening it to the revelation of 1996’s Super Mario 64. And while Odyssey may not have the wonder of adding an extra dimension to its game world, it does feature Cappy.

This lovable new character sits atop the intrepid goomba-stomper’s head in place of his iconic red cap. And it’s Cappy’s ability to posses the objects and enemies of Odyssey that helps Mario rescue Princess Peach from the marital clutches of Bowser. It’s a unique new gameplay system, and one boasting a friendly face in the form of Cappy’s emotive, cartoonish eyes.

Thanks to the inventive ambition of maker Robert Jamison (or rejamison), you can make an animatronic Cappy for yourself. All you need is a 3D printer, Adafruit Trinket 5V, servo motor, a small powerbank and an imitation Mario cap. In total Jamison’s bill of materials came in under $40.

Possession of Inanimate Objects Not Guaranteed

Jamison details the build in a post on GitHub. He even goes as far as to include the minutiae like print times and material weights. As far as project instructions go, its super specific and wonderfully helpful.

Building your own Cappy requires five 3D prints, which take care of the eyes, and rails and mount for the electronics. Take note that it’ll take some painting to perfect the look, unless you plan to dissect the STLs and multi-material it instead. The printable files can be found on Thingiverse.

An Adafruit Trinket 5V microcontroller is used to tell the eyes where to ‘look’. Jamison customized the Adafruit SoftServo library for use in the Arduino internal development environment while setting up the board.

This custom library (provided by Jamison) is needed for the Cappy Eyes sketch that will run on the microcontroller. He explains it all clearly on GitHub. Basically, the result is that the 3D printed eyes will move to a random position every few seconds.

Head on over to GitHub for all the necessary parts and full instructions.
