One of the most daunting aspects of acquiring a new skill is creating all of the tools and shortcuts that go along with it, just to keep up with the professionals. When learning new programs, a lot of those assets can be found online – that is if you know where to look.

Blender is a free, open-source 3D creation suite with professional-level power behind it. It can be used by itself to create stunning art and animation, or its assets can be ported into other programs for video game design, 3D printing, and more.

Blender can use the Wavefront .obj file type or its own .blend format for projects and files, among many others. Here, we’ve compiled a list of sites where you can find models that can be dragged and dropped into your next Blender project!

In putting together this list, we only looked at sites that have at least 50 models available, have a discrete section for free downloads, and are royalty-free. Generally, this means that the models are downloadable under some type of Creative Commons license.

So, now that we know what we’re in for, let’s see the sites!

You can check out the free models available through their website prior to committing to it, although models can be downloaded through the add-on interface.

Their motto is "For the Users, By the Users" (Source: Blender 3D Models)

BlenderNation

Image of: 3. BlenderNation
BlenderNation has free models and rigs, but the true WOW factor is their tutorials (Source: BlenderNation)

BlenderNation is a Blender-centric news site with articles, tutorials, and most importantly for our purposes, an entire section dedicated to models and rigs where you can download assets for your project. This section is not the focus of the website, so it has fewer offerings, but it makes up for that in variety. Everything from the Futurama spaceship to air conditioners can be gotten for free.

You just have to dig a little bit more than you would for the other sites on this list. It might take a bit of time to find exactly what you’re looking for. Still, it’s a good resource to know, and who knows – maybe it’ll help you get more involved in the Blender community at large!

  • Registration required: No
  • Number of models: Unknown, but new content is regularly posted
  • File types available: .blend, .obj, .3ds, .max, .fbx, and more

The staff picks showcase some of the best work in Blender, such as this stunning bedroom scene.

CGTrader

CGTrader is a very popular model and 3D asset platform that functions as a marketplace. This means that 3D artists and designers can sell their work through the CGTrader platform, resulting in a huge selection and variety of models – including those for free.

There are over 115,000 free 3D models available at the time of writing, most of which are compatible with Blender. There’s a separate page specifically for free 3D models, and you filter the selection by formats (such as .blend, .fbx, .obj, and more), polygon count, type of license, and other tags. The navigation is smooth and uncluttered, as is downloading the chosen 3D models (just make sure to be logged in).

  • Registration required: Yes
  • Number of models: Over 115,000 free models
  • File types available: .blend, .obj, .3ds, .max, .fbx, and more

Open3DModel

Open3dModel has thousands of free models in multiple file formats
Open3dModel has thousands of free models in multiple file formats (Source: Open3DModel)

Open3DModel has one of the most robust cataloging systems on this list. If you’re looking for something specific, it’s actually faster to go through its sub-categories than to search its massive library yourself.

It has over a dozen useful categories, including “Nature”, “Electronics”, and “Interiors”, but it’s the subcategories that really shine. Need a specific kind of tree? “Nature > Tree > Pine” will get you what you want. Unfortunately, this removes the file type filter, so you may find the perfect tree, but in .3ds rather than .blend. Still, the system is so easy to peruse that you’ll find something just as good in no time.

One oddity of the site, though: It doesn’t use the usual hyperlink conventions. When you find a file you want, such as this Amy Rose from Sonic the Hedgehog, you must click where it says “Download Link” in black, rather than clicking a button graphic or even one of the hyperlinks. Once you click on that, you’ll be taken to a download page where the final download button is greyed out in between some advertising and the list of tags. It’s a bit counterintuitive, but it works, and it’s free!

  • Registration required: No
  • Number of models: Nearly 145,000 models of varying quality, ~3,200 of which are .blend files
  • File types available: .blend, .obj, .3ds, .max, .gsm, and more

3dsky

One of the best-kept secrets on the Internet
One of the best-kept secrets on the internet (Source: 3dsky)

3dsky has a staggering number of home decor models to download, from antique oak doors to the complete interior of a beauty salon. The trick here is navigation, as most of the models are .3ds or .fbx with not many available as .blend. There are plenty of .obj files, though.

It’s also important to be aware that not everything is free, although you can filter out paid models. The site mostly works on a credit system, allowing you so many downloads for a set dollar amount per month, with a limited amount of free assets available as a teaser.

Still, the sheer number of models means it’s worth taking a look at. If you’re searching for just the right mid-century television unit to kit out your retro animation, chances are it’s in here.

  • Registration required: Yes
  • Number of models: Over 140,000 free models
  • File types available: .obj, .3ds, .max, .fbx

Clara.io

It can take a little digging to find what you're looking for, but it's worth it (Source: Clara.io)

In addition to its over 100,000 models (reportedly) of various types, Clara.io is actually an in-browser 3D modeling tool. You can edit the files you find online before downloading and using them in Blender. The car is the wrong color, or the park bench is the wrong scale? No problem – you can fix it before you click it!

The models themselves go far beyond the usual as well, including multiple animations of Bumblebee from the Transformers live-action movies waving merrily or Alduin, a dragon from Skyrim, with Logan stamped on its neck for some reason. All in all, an intriguing website to visit, even if you don’t end up taking any of the exhibits home.

  • Registration required: Yes
  • Number of models: The free 3D model library currently has over 55,000 entries
  • File types available: .blend, .obj, .stl, .fbx, .dae, and more

TurboSquid is yet another 3D model marketplace that gathers talented artists, designers, and game developers. This one, however, is an old timer, being created around the year 2000 when the 3D industry was still very primitive.

Today, TurboSquid is part of the Shutterstock group and offers a huge variety of models for many different applications: architecture, interior design, game development, animation, and much more. In terms of Blender-compatible models, TurboSquid has over 32,000 free assets in formats such as .blend, .obj, .fbx, and many others.

The free models can be filtered by formats, quality, poly count, and license. There are, however, some paid models and collections listed on the “Free 3D Models” page, so be aware!

One of the largest museums in the world, the Smithsonian has a collection of art, cultural artifacts, and natural specimens that would make alien archeologists drool. Recently, they’ve begun using 3D scanning techniques to digitize their collection and have allowed the public to access it. And, as you can guess by its inclusion on our list, it’s completely free!

The only restriction is that the files are not for commercial use. The museum allows these files to be downloaded and used for non-profit, private, and educational purposes.

  • Registration required: No
  • Number of models: Currently over 2,600, but more are being added all the time

Blogscopia

Blogscopia is an interesting inclusion on our list, as its main purpose is not as a file repository at all! It’s a blog for Scopia, a company in Spain that makes 3D images and videos. The blog is run by Carlos Folch, and what a blog it is!

Every downloadable texture, asset, model, and render is painstakingly accurate to its real-life counterpart. There are no long opinion posts or intrusive advertising, just a simple, clean design that allows you to get as many high-quality 3D assets as you can carry. The blog even has a helpful button at the top to download all of its contents in a single zip file.

  • Registration required: No
  • Number of models: Over 50
  • File types available: .blend, .obj, .fbx, and more
