There’s not too much we can preface this article for the ADIMLab 3D Printer with. The product of newly established ADIMLab, which was founded by the folks behind FLSUN, the ADIMLAB 3D printer is a budget big-bed printer with some noteworthy quality of life features.
You may also have encountered this machine under the name ADIMLab Gantry and even HC Maker 7. We have been informed by a contact at ADIMLab that HCMaker is the internal designation for the printer — they are one and the same. similarly, ADIMLab Gantry is supposedly the official name, though we’ve yet to see it stated as such in the numerous store listings for the printer.
It’s early days for ADIMLab currently, with only two machines to its name — the Gantry and smaller Ender-3-like Gantry-S.
Join us, as we take a look at the specs and features of this ADIMLab 3D printer and try to make sense of it all.
Looking over the features, the ADIMLab 3D Printer appears to follow the same basic blueprint established by the Creality CR-10, with a tall frame of aluminum extrusions surrounding a large 300mm+ print bed and an umbilically attached control box with power supply.
Priced in the $300 to $400 range, the ADIMLab 3D Printer also matches Creality’s offering but differentiates itself with a few noteworthy features.
For starters, its large glass print bed reaches to 310 x 310mm, with a 410mm print ceiling — marginally larger in all axes than the CR-10. Likewise, we see aluminum extrusions comprising the frame of the ADIMLab 3D Printer, albeit narrower extrusions that we forsee posing a stability problem for taller prints that use all of the available print height.
Indeed, we’ve found some user comments stating their need for additional bracing for theADIMLab 3D Printer — something shared across some printers that use the smaller aluminum extrusions with an X- and Z-axis assembly running perpendicular to the printer’s base.
Another differentiator for the ADIMLab 3D Printer is the use of a direct drive extruder, instead of the more commonly found Bowden style setup. Such a change will, in theory, give greater precision in retractions and, depending on the design of the extruder itself, better handling of flexible filaments. In theory — without going hands-on, we couldn’t speak to the reality of the ADIMLab 3D Printer.
One thing we can say for certain is that by adding the mass of an extruder motor to the X-axis carriage means there will be a lot of inertia to overcome with direction changes when printing. We would be surprised to see any blisteringly quick prints on the ADIMLab 3D Printer.
Underpinning its large sheet glass bed is a dual rail system that should ensure decent stability for the bed’s Y-axis travel, which is driven by stepper motor mounted at the rear of the printer’s frame.
The ADIMLab 3D Printer features dual Z-axis stepper motors as standard. The benefit of this should come as, once again, greater stability. Unlike a single motor driven Z-axis, which raises the X-axis rail evenly through rigidity and tension on the aluminum extrusion and pulleys on the opposing side from the motor; a dual Z-axis motor arrangement lightens the load and easily provides the necessary stability. One downside here is the possibility of the motors desynchronizing, resulting in an uneven X-axis.
Cable management from the printhead is neatly stowed in a drag chain, which is nice to see. As are vibration dampers on the steppers, resulting in quiet operation, and a 24V power output, which means that the hotend and bed should heat up to printing temperatures pretty quickly.
Coming semi-assembled, as is often the case with 3D printer kits in this price range, the ADIMLab 3D Printer should take all of 10 minutes or so to assemble.
