Did you know? PLA 3D printer filaments doesn’t require the use of a heated print bed. However, this doesn’t mean that a heated print bed shouldn’t be used.
Beyond the realm of 3D printing, PLA plastic is used for packaging of all sorts, especially for food, medical implants, and disposable utensils.
This wood filament is made by mixing normal PLA with very fine wood fibers. The result is a wood-like material that can be printed like any other 3D printer material.
This PLA filament glows in the dark. It’s perfect for printing halloween props.
HATCHBOX 3D sells PLA 3D filaments in many different colors and special varieties including translucent and glow-in-the-dark.
PLA 3D printing filaments are great for making safe toys, objects, or storage compartments for example. It’s the go-to filament.
Fun fact: LEGO bricks are made out of ABS plastic.
Using Acetone, ABS can be post-processed to have a smooth and shiny surface. This is not possible with PLA.
PLA 3D printer filament is biodegradable and non-toxic. It is not recommended to print cups and dishes for real use though – it’s not considered food safe. For that, best get a spool of PET or PET-G.
While printing, PLA is said to give off little to no fumes. The room you are printing in might smell like candy.
eSUN claim to have made this filament 10 times tougher than other PLA filaments on the market while reducing stringing problems and cracking.
PLA and ABS will deteriorate over time if exposed to UV rays and moisture.
PLA and ABS for that matter are hygroscopic materials. This means they absorb moisture from the air around them. This can be avoided by properly storing the 3D printer filaments in sealed containers in cool, dry areas. Alternatively, wait until the last minute to break the seal on the packaging and use up the spool as fast as possible.
Problems that can come up due to moisture absorption are nozzle clogging, bubbling and crackling of the filament when it heats up and poor end results of the print.
PLA 3D printer filaments have a tendency to warp or contract during printing. Tip: Don’t print in a cold room make sure your 3D printer is calibrated correctly and set up for printing PLA. A heated build plate can also help (not too hot).
ABS is stronger, more durable and more flexible than PLA. However, ABS doesn’t share the same biodegradable properties as PLA and is harder to print with.
PLA 3D printer filaments are considered easy to print with when compared to other 3D printing materials.
PLA 3D printer filaments come in all sorts of ‘blends’. Apart from metallic appearances, PLA is often mixed with wood fibers, sparkling particles, actual metal powder and carbon fiber. There is even a beer and hemp “flavored” PLA filament.
